The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (WCA) protects bats and their roosts in England, Scotland and Wales. If your going underground (the favoured home of bats) you need to understand 'Bat Law'. A good website with lots of information can be found here, www.bats.org.uk |
| Bats may also be protected by site safeguard measures, for example by virtue of their roost site or feeding grounds being notified as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) or a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). | ||

Photograph of a Bat hanging in between the straw stalactites in Chelm’s Combe Quarry Cave. Taken by Alan Gray – 5 February 1986. Now it is forbidden to take photographs of bats as the flash could disturb their hibernation. |
| However I believe that this law came in after the date this photograph was taken. | ||
