Disclaimer Any opinions expressed in this Journal are those of the Author and not necessarily those of the editor or the Axbridge Caving Group Editorial Despite many ACG members wishing to be Journal Editor after a long secret ballot at the AGM I was voted in as Journal Editor. You may just observe that there is also new format to the Journal. As agreed at the April 2005 ACG meeting the majority of members will be receiving this Journal on a CD. There are two versions on the CD; a printable version and also a web based version. Some members and all exchanges with other clubs will have a printed version. This has several advantages for both the club – Very cheap to produce (no photocopying costs), standard 2nd Class Post; and members – no longer will you have blurred poor quality photographs but high quality colour photos. If you are not happy to receive the CD version please contact the club and future versions will be sent out in the printed format. Have Fun Alan GrayINDEX
Cover Photograph – This photograph which is from the ACG collection shows “Mr. J. Ellis on ladder in Gorge [GB], climbing into the Ooze - 4 August 1956” (Photographer unknown). It is the only photograph of the ladder leading into the Ooze that I have seen. The Ooze passage, opened up in 1948, starts at the base of the ladder leading up to the Devil’s Elbow Route and quickly degenerates to a very low crawl. The Ooze exits at the lower end of Gorge 10m from floor level. The Ooze was blocked by the 1968 floods on Mendip. When visiting GB Cavern it is well worth looking at the start of Ooze passage, it is very rarely visited, and has some good formations.
