In common with all cave digs the removal of spoil from Carcass Cave was slowing down since all the underground stacking spaces were filled and it was nearly impossible to drag the filled buckets to the surface due to the constrictions in the cave passage. Earlier this year a new dig was started which, eventually, broke through to the old shaft which links to the surface. Thus removal of spoil to the surface became possible but involved much man handling of buckets. Then a bright idea the installation of a monorail and over the weekend of 9th October this was installed. The monorail is 16m long and runs from the surface to the top of the main shaft which is about ⅔ of the way down the cave. Full buckets can now be easily hauled from the bottom and empty buckets just trundle down the rail under the power of gravity. The removal of spoil has been made so easy and speeded up the removal by a factor of 10 it estimated.
